Al Wong

Our dear friend Allen Wong left the world early on the morning of March 7, 1996, his body consumed by cancer. Suffice it to say that Al was everything I hope my son will be, shy and kind, caring and generous, honest and joyful. When I last held his hand he was able to coax a small smile to his surface, it was a reminder of the goodness of living and loving; and I remember Al each time I see such a smile on the lips of my son.

Al Wong (sometimes referred to as "Cop Killer") lived in San Francisco south of Twin Peaks. He rode a dark metallic blue P200 sporting white accents and stripes (and a slight bit of engine tuning.) Al came to scooters late (at 32 or so) after 16 years riding every sort of motorcycle. His regular ride was a big black BMW motorcycle (he didn't own a car.) Through all his variety of bikes he always had an interest in Vespas, and finally he gave in and got bitten.

He's the only scooterist I know who could run over a San Francisco police officer's bicycle and walk away without even a ticket. This happened on the Sunday ride during the Kings Classic II, the ride ran into heavy traffic in the Presidio (national park) and the cop waved Al through on the left, right into the bicycle. The cop was pretty torqued at first, but Al talked his way out with his trademark sincerity and shy smile.

A day on a scooter doesn't pass without a thought of Al, and each Thursday night I expect him to walk into our meeting bearing his usual enthusiasm, curiosity, and that smile.
